External Description:

The Instrument Sharpening Technician II is responsible for installations, repairs, regular maintenance and calibration of most classes of surgical instruments at the component level under the direction of the Clinical Engineering Manager. The Manager may offer guidance to Instrument Sharpening Tech I staff, and offer in-service and individual training for equipment users on subjects such as electrical safety, proper operation and care of the surgical instruments.  The Manager will monitor the work of outside instrument sharpening vendors to ensure quality standards are met.
 
The Sharpening Technician can expect to perform the following:
               
  • Perform installations, regular maintenance, repairs, and calibrations on assigned surgical instruments to ensure proper operation and function.
  • Perform all assignments in a competent and timely manner according to current policies and procedures.
  • Monitor service provided by outside instrument sharpening vendors, and thus responsible for quality control of service provided.
  • Establish equipment baselines, performs inspections and evaluations, interprets test results and makes recommendations to solve performance deficiencies.
  • Install, repair and calibrate most classes of surgical instruments at a component level.
  • Perform planned maintenance and electrical safety inspections as assigned.
  • Use diagnostic service software appropriate to the equipment being serviced.
  • Assist in the evaluation of new equipment, accessories and supplies.
  • Inspect incoming equipment for compliance with codes, standards, and manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Establish and maintain files of supporting literature for each piece of surgical instrumentation, such as the manufacturers’ technical literature, reference standards, specifications and other documents necessary to ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulatory agencies including TJC.
  • Maintain technical skills and required certifications to perform job duties.
  • May recommend new equipment or equipment upgrades and review possible new capital expenditures
  • Assists with the administrative record keeping responsibilities of the department, such as work orders, maintenance history records, PM and safety inspections, repairs, reports, and repair parts inventory; as well as any necessary reports to ensure accurate recording of activities for code and regulatory purposes.
     
    The ideal candidate will maintain a safe driving record, possess strong technical, mechanical, analytical and problem solving skills, physically able to reach, lift, climb, crawl or otherwise see and work in tight and/or dim places, solid knowledge of computerized systems: recordkeeping, PM, work order systems,
    timekeeping, etc.  The candidate will have the ability to communicate appropriately verbally and in writing using the English language and work and accomplish tasks in a stressful, fast-paced environment.

  • Education - Associates Degree in biomedical equipment technology or electronics or equivalent training experience required
  • Experience - 4+ years’ experience in Instrument Sharpening industry
  • Licenses/Certifications – Texas Driver’s License
