External Description:

The Perfusionist provides patient care in the form of operation of the extracorporeal circulation equipment during any medical situation where it is necessary to support or replace a person's cardiopulmonary, circulatory, or respiratory function. The  Perfusionist selects the appropriate equipment and techniques necessary for support, treatment, measurement, or supplementation of the cardiopulmonary and circulatory system of a patient, including the safe monitoring, analysis, and treatment of physiologic conditions under an order and supervision of a physician.                 
 
WHAT IS EXPECTED (Essential Job Functions)
 
  1. Monitors the altered circulatory process, initiates appropriate action when abnormalities arise, and keeps surgeon and other personnel fully informed.
 
  1. Ensures the sterility and integrity of packaging of disposable equipment used as well as the correct setup and breakdown of disposable and non-disposable and sterile and non-sterile equipment.
 
  1. Monitors cell saver and operates the heart-lung machine, blood gas analysis machine, clotting time/heparin analyzer, and cardiac-assist devices.
 
  1. Mixes and administers drugs and solutions required for myocardial preservation in a manner that is consistent with industry best practices and established policies and procedures.
 
  1. Adjusts gas flow and mixtures, administers anesthetic agents, blood, drugs and fluids via the extracorporeal circuit in a manner that consistently results in safe and effective procedures.
 
  1. Records relevant perfusion information during surgery; analyzes and maintains records after surgery.
 
  1. Performs quality control/preventive maintenance to ensure accuracy and longevity of equipment. Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies.
 
The ideal candidate has excellent verbal and written communication skills, the ability to work cohesively as a team, and the ability to react calmly in stressful situations.

  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
  • No Experience required
  • Licensed Perfusionist
  • Certified Clinical Perfusionist (CCP)
  • Certified by the American Board of Cardio Perfusion or willing to obtain within one 1 year of employment
