The Palliative Care Child Life Specialist will participate as a core member of the adult Supportive & Palliative Care service; educating and supporting adults in regards to emotionally supporting their well-children (0-18 years), throughout the challenges of a loved one�s serious illness or injury, including end-of-life and bereavement. The child life specialist will meet with well-children to answer questions and help them understand and manage their thoughts and feelings about their loved one�s medical condition; utilizing bibliotherapy, appropriate verbiage and play that is based on meeting the needs of each child at their developmental level. The Palliative Child Life Specialist will facilitate developmentally appropriate anticipatory grief, grief and bereavement interventions with well-children; including preparation for an anticipated death, preparation for hospital visit to say their final goodbye to their loved one, support during transition to hospice, disclosure of expected, traumatic or unexpected death of their loved one, legacy and memory-making interventions, preparation for funeral or memorial services, and early grief processing support. Documents appropriate written overview of patient and family interactions with required components and in accordance with the Association of Child Life Professionals, BSWH system, and the child life department.
 
The ideal candidate possesses basic mastery of child life theory and practice, as well as expansive knowledge of child development; possesses a complex understanding of child life scope of practice, including the knowledge of when support needs fall outside of child life scope of practice; possesses basic understanding of prioritization of child life tasks and responsibilities, often while working independently or with minimal supervision; ability to actively engage and listen to what other people are communicating; ability to work with culturally, spiritually and ethnically diverse patients and families; and works and communicates well with patients and families of all ages, healthcare professionals, support staff, and community professionals.

  • Bachelor�s Degree in Child Life/Child Development
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Child Life Specialist (CCLS) certification from the Association of Child Life Professional
