Position Title:

External Description:

�         Ensures the effective operation and administration of the child life program by developing annual goals and objectives and evaluating program effectiveness.

�         Develops and implements curriculum for Child Life student programs. Provides orientation and teaching of appropriate child life principles to students assigned to Child Life Services.

�         Collaborates and consults with other departments to provide optimal services for patients and families. Communicates and works with other departments, committees and interdisciplinary teams.

�         Assesses psychosocial needs of the children and their families to understand and offer age appropriate explanations of and coping strategies for key aspects of illness, anticipatory grief, death, loss and bereavement to children, sublings and/or their parents. Designs and facilitates therapeutic activities as an outlet for expression and normalcy.

�         Implements legacy and memory making activities for children and/or the entire family, as well as provide suggestions for outside activities. Provide grief and bereavement interventions and educational sessions for parents and siblings with information and resources for additional support, and age appropriate preparation for death and memorial services.

�         Provides emotional support to families and patients to promote acceptance of and coping with illness and medical encounters. Provides appropriate medical play and preparation sessions with patients and families to facilitate understanding of medical procedures and emotional growth of patients.

�         Coordinates and plans special events for pediatric patients in cooperation with internal staff and community partners.

�         Provides clinical supervision, in service training and educational opportunities for new and existing Child Life staff, students and volunteers to ensure continuity and quality of program. Provides opportunity for continued professional development for child life staff. Communicates with staff to discuss clinical work, i.e. case conferences, patient needs and optimize utilization of resources.

�         Prepares and recommends effective budgets to cover the projected costs of staffing, equipment and supplies needed to maintain quality and safe patient programs. Evaluates, determines and requisitions suitable play and therapeutic equipment and materials.

Masters degree in Child Life, Child Development, Education, Special Education or related field preferred or BA with 2 years of experience
  • Child Life Specialist Certification required, BLS
