Department of Anesthesiology: 

 

The Temple Region of Baylor Scott & White Health, Central Texas Division has a total of 1,009 medical staff members, with 419 APP staff, 472 residents, and 38 ACGME programs. In 2019, Baylor Scott & White Medical Center, Temple Memorial/Pavilion and McLane Children's hospital performed a total of 35,621 OR cases. 

 

Reporting Relationship:

 

The Chair of Anesthesiology reports directly to the Chief Medical Officer, Temple Region and Associate Chief Medical Officer, Central Texas Division of Baylor Scott & White Health. The Chair will provide leadership, direction and development to all clinical, research, and academic activities within the Department of Anesthesiology. 

 

The fellowship-trained anesthesiologists and pain specialists at Baylor Scott & White Health combine medical education and scientific research to provide the highest quality care in the region.  

 

Position Summary:

 
The appointment of a new Chair of the Anesthesiology represents a unique opportunity to revitalize and build upon a strong clinical foundation throughout the five regions of the Central Texas Division of Baylor Scott & White Health. The Chair will provide leadership, direction and development to all clinical, research, and academic activities within the Department of Anesthesiology. The Chair will work collaboratively with clinical, academic, and administrative leaders to establish and execute the strategic vision of the Surgical Departments and perioperative teams within the greater medical enterprise. In addition, the Chair will motivate and develop faculty and staff by assessing and addressing their developmental needs. The Chair will also be expected to maintain a clinical practice; to be responsible for the clinical education and training of students, residents, and fellows; to oversee trainees' interaction with and treatment of patients; and to sustain and advance opportunities in translational and clinical research. The Chair has historically held an academic appointment with Texas A&M at the level of Professor. 

 

Specific Responsibilities: The Chair will have the following specific responsibilities:
-Provides strategic direction and leadership for the Department in its clinical, education, research and administrative mission 

 

-Translates a departmental vision into exemplary clinical, educational and research programs with the goal of achieving a top-tiered, nationally-ranked department

 

-Serves as a physician champion and leader for the provision of the highest quality healthcare and clinical performance excellence.Responsible for the financial results of the Department and will form strong working partnerships with the Department Administrator and Regional Medical and Administrative leadership to develop the annual department budget including setting financial goals, establishing budgets, and setting RVU targets for each faculty member. Will regularly review financial statements and available performance indicators, and will routinely report progress against goals, adjusting resources and services to meet requirements for the business.


-Responsible for the Physician Salary Budget and the Physician Compensation Plan. The budget is prepared in collaboration with the administrative partner, i.e. Director of Anesthesiology.


-Is the supervisor for the faculty within the Department, and will oversee recruitment efforts for new or replacement faculty positions, set standards for each faculty and hold them accountable, monitoring performance, establishing staff development plans, and providing individual mentoring and counseling as necessary.


-Displays high degree of initiative, judgment, discretion and decision making to achieve organizational objectives.


-Establishes an atmosphere of positive, supportive physician and employee relations.


-Leads by example and teaches others to create a mutually respectful, courteous and compassionate atmosphere


-Integrates institutional priorities within the Department, and collaborate with other stakeholders, including Central Texas Divisional and Temple Regional leadership, to achieve institutional objectives and lead positive change.


-Builds relationships with CTX Division and Regional Leadership, to achieve Departmental, Temple Regional, Central Texas Divisional, and BSWH goals.


-Facilitates and participates in development activities in the areas of promotion of extramurally-funded clinical research, efficient and effective organization and delivery of clinical services, generation of gifts and endowments, creation and licensing of intellectual property, and the negotiation of contracts for clinical research and other services.


-Facilitates and ensures that the Department achieves high performance levels in financial performance, support of education, clinical service, research and collaboration with colleagues.

Candidate Qualifications:  The qualified candidate will have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

 

-Must have at least five years of experience in operational and financial management and leadership in a hospital, academic healthcare center, or academic group practice environment. Additional training in management or administration is preferred. Experience in medical staff functions is essential as is working knowledge of hospital operations, quality improvement, Lean processes, and strategic planning.

 

-Strong leadership as well as organizational and communication skills needed to effectively operate in the complex environment of regional integrated health system, and to effectively manage conflicting agendas.

 

-Ability to define a vision and execute it; should be a visionary who sees potential and opportunity.

 

-Experience in facilitating and coordinating physician alignment activities, in-cluding building relationships with both community and academic physicians.

 

-Outstanding clinical experience with understanding of the clinical enterprise and the patient care delivery process and the knowledge to manage and build clinical practices.

 

-Knowledge of and experience developing quality infrastructure, including development and implementation of decision tools, clinical protocols and guide-lines, care management programs, and outcome measurement assessments.

 

-Working knowledge of information technology and medical informatics with a track record of introducing information technology into clinical practice.

 

-Highly skilled negotiator.

 

-Record of success in mentoring and developing faculty and supporting them in their academic, teaching and clinical endeavors.

 

-Capability to succeed in different environments as an effective change agent, capable of making tough decisions.

 

-Understanding of research; ideally an excellent reputation as a clinical scientist with the ability to attract and retain exceptional clinical scientists.

 

-Understanding of quality, accountability and the balance between clinical care, investigation and teaching.

 

-High energy and enthusiasm balanced with a highly-professional demeanor.

 

-Ability to build bridges and function as a team player who is willing to work with other departments to leverage individual and team strengths.

Education and Licensure:              

 

-Must have or be able to obtain an unrestricted Texas medical license.

 

-Must be board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA).

 

-Must have demonstrated academic success that is sufficient to qualify for faculty appointment at the rank of full Professor or Associate Professor.

 

-Must have national recognition as a clinical leader, and clinical educator.
