I am the posterchild for diversity. Like a tapestry, I’m a uniquely woven creation of my ancestor’s and my own experiential wisdom. As a direct beneficiary of their collective triumphs, I choose to honor their legacy by acknowledging and incorporating their respective cultures—both Samoan and Texan. On my father’s side of the family, I am a first generation American. And from my mother’s side, a proud sixth generation Texan (as well an established Daughter of the American Revolution). Unity amongst differences can be appreciated, and assuredly do, optimistically coexist.
My rich heritage and diverse background provide expansive opportunities to embrace key values of respect, loyalty, humility, generosity, and living a family and faith-centered lifestyle. Although Samoa is still considered a developing nation, its people are natural-born performers and known globally for their hospitality, musical and athletic abilities. Ever heard of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Jason Momoa, or Disney’s “Moana”? Yes, all Samoan. In my family, the free expression of our heritage is a natural expectation and responsibility. As we share our culture, we’re offering up what we treasure most as a gift for others to enjoy. Visitors to any Samoan village or a typical Samoan home are often treated as honored guests and extended the best of whatever they possess—the best accommodations, the best food, etc. This is a simple yet fundamental expression of respect which is at the very heart of Samoan tradition.
When last in Samoa, I visited a relative in the hospital and was shocked at the primitive conditions, antiquated techniques, and limited resources available there. Due to the premature death of my own father at the age of forty-seven, I choose to personally address and advocate for the prevention and management of diseases that commonly afflict our people such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension. Historically, Samoans were fierce warriors who skillfully navigated the South Pacific. As we now chart our course in modern society, I hope Samoans worldwide continue to successfully steer with discernment while celebrating our timeless cultural identity.
